Eligibility

The AFUW-Q/FFI fellowships are open to women scholars who:


(a) are graduates of a recognized tertiary institution from any country who are intending to take up or continue postgraduate studies at a recognized tertiary institution in Queensland, Australia, or


(b) have graduated at a recognized tertiary institution in Queensland and are intending to take up or continue postgraduate studies at a recognized tertiary institution elsewhere.
Women graduates who will be on full-time salaries; fully paid study or other leave; or Australian Postgraduate Awards or similar scholarships during the tenure of the fellowship, are not eligible to apply.
 

The Fellowship Fund may award at least one fellowship to a person whose plan of study is at the University of Queensland.

The value of the Fellowships is at least the equivalent of, or better than an Australian Postgraduate Award. The number awarded each year depends on the funds available. In 2006, one 3-year and five 1-year Fellowships were offered. Women graduates on full-time salaries or on fully-paid study leave during the Fellowship year are not eligible to apply. Women PhD graduates are not eligible to apply.

Conditions

The Freda Bage Fellowship

  • restricted to PhD studies
  • not tenable at the institution through which the applicant obtained her first degree
  • studies must commence by September 2008
  • maximum period of the Fellowship is three years
  • stipend is paid annually
  • second and third stipend payments are subject to satisfactory progress of the research work, as indicated by
    • receipt of two progress reports from the Fellowship recipient, one after one year and one after two years of tenure
    • receipt of two confidential progress reports from the supervisor of the research work, one after one year and one after two years of tenure of the Fellowship; a final typewritten report is required at completion of the Fellowship, and should include information about any publications arising from the funded study

The Commemorative Fellowships

In honour of Molly Budtz-Olsen, Dorothy Davidson, Freda Freeman, Audrey Harrisson, Audrey Jorss, Margaret Mittelheuser, Betty Patterson, University Women of Queensland.

  • may be used for formal postgraduate study consistent with the aims of the Fellowship Fund;
  • maximum period of the Fellowship is one year commencing by September 2006;
  • successful applicants may reapply for a Fellowship in subsequent years; stipend is paid in two parts -
    • one half at the commencement of the Fellowship's tenure and, subject to the conditions below, one half after six months of tenure;
    • second stipend payment is subject to satisfactory progress as indicated by a progress report from the Fellowship recipient after six months of tenure
  • a final typewritten report is required at completion of the Fellowship, and should include information about any publications arising from the funded study.

 Applications for study in 2009 are due on 30 June, 2008

*** Please Note: To be eligible for an AFUW-Q Inc/FFI Inc Fellowship, applicants must be graduates of a Queensland institution, or are intending to study at a Queensland institution.
